Blindness / Jose Saramago ; translated from the Portuguese by Giovanni Pontiero.
A city is struck by an epidemic of "white blindness" as one after another its residents succumb to the disease. City officials confind the blind to a vacant mental hospital instructing guards to shoot them if they come out and subjecting those inside to a new horror of lawlessness and a fight for survival. Only one person is able to help them, the woman who pretended she was blind in order to stay with her husband.
