At first, she represents the fabled East which so recently had been revealed to the Western world, and later she becomes reality as the dark lady of the sonnets--a lady dark in actual fact. It was this dark lady who opened the way to Shakespeare's tragic vision, his personal tragedies, and the bursting creativity of his last years.
